Experience the Planets

EXPERIENCE THE PLANETS is a stunning collective art project that aims to “illustrate [the planets’] wonders, weaving art and science together.”

Here are some of the great HD wallpapers they offer.

From the Project Page:

The cornerstone of ETP is its process, which holds each artist responsible for understanding and representing the science behind their work. Combining research with creative exploration and fact-based critique, the ETP community strives to make every piece an artist produces the best they’ve ever done.

Currency Collage: $1 Bill

From the Artist Statement:

The one dollar bill is the most ubiquitous piece of paper in America. Collage asks the question: what might be done to make it something else? It is a ripe material: intaglio printed on sturdy linen stock, covered in decorative filigree, and steeped in symbolism and concept. Blade and glue transform it-reproducing the effects of tapestries, paints, engravings, mosaics, and computers—striving for something bizarre, beautiful, or unbelievable… the foreign in the familiar.

A Contraption for Cigars to Play Woodwinds

Contraptions, kinetic sculptures, Rube Goldberg machines… I love this stuff.

Ronald van der Meijs, has brought together two artificial lungs, smokes hand-rolled cigars, and four recorders (a bass flute, alto, tenor, and a soprano) for a sound contraption he calls Play it one more time for me La Ville Fumée in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, once the European capital of Cigar production.

“In the old days the city was full of cigar smoke. There were lots of mechanical parts, steam, noise, and even whistles to start the work in the old cigar factories,” Meijs says. “So this installation is in many ways a metaphor for the cigar production of Eindhoven.”

New Media Chinese Art from Yang Yongliang

Shanghai-based artist Yang Yongliang has taken the eyes and heart of the more traditional Chinese landscape and calligraphy, and invested it with the expressive ability of the newest technology and techniques, including digital manipulation, video and photography.

“As long as the characteristics don’t change, the media you use to express the art doesn’t matter.”

I think these landscapes in Chinese Porcelain are pretty amazing, and I am absolutely in love with the video landscapes.

Here is a sample of the video referenced in the Creator’s Project piece:

Pop Russian General Portrait Project

We’ve seen these before, but there are a ton new portraits.

Artist, Steve Payne’s statement from his blog replaceface.tumblr.com:

“George Dawe was an English portrait artist who painted 329 portraits of Russian generals active during Napoleon’s invasion of Russia for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace, Saint Petersburg, Russia. I’m using digital copies of these paintings as a basis for my own work which involves incorporating celebrities into the paintings using photoshop.”
